A beacon is a part of a webpage that causes your computer to communicate with another computer on the Internet.

For example, if you visit CNN.com the CNN computer will give you a webpage to read, but that webpage might also have a very small image hidden in the corner that tells another computer that you are visiting CNN. Why would CNN do this? It's how advertising works.
